Women’s solidarity quilt

Friday 5 May 2006 Bojura Pavlova

The global solidarity women’s quilt, made by a number of unique parts, started from Oceania and continued on towards West. It has been passing from country to country bringing the messages of the World Charter of Humanity for freedom and solidarity, for fight against poverty and violence against women, for respecting women’s physical and moral integrity.

The relay of the Charter started on March 8th, 2005 from Sao Paolo, Brazil, and passed through 53 countries, in order to complete its journey on the 17th of October in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. Each country organised the activities in their own way with respect to the local necessities. Women from Kenya sent messages and sang songs for protection of their children. Their sisters in Ecuador, Peru and Belgium made radio-broadcasts and street demonstrations, while in Australia, Iran, France and Canada they elaborated brochures, flags and different materials with messages for distribution. The Turkish activists marched in front of the Parliament in Ankara, in order to request for protection of their rights for equality, freedom, justice and peace.

Women in Bulgaria demonstrated their solidarity with the 24 hours campaign with a number of artistic and educational initiatives and debates with children, adolescents and women from NGOs. The Charter was distributes by Gender Education, Research and Technologies Foundation (GERT), in partnership with Zaedno Foundation. A common meeting between Greek feminists and Bulgarian representatives of the syndicates and GERT was organised at the border between the two countries.

The relay of the Charter and the quilt of solidarity passed through dozens of countries. It involved hundreds of women and woke their consciousness up. It united their voices and efforts for improvement of the women’s situation, for reduction of poverty and violence. It is indispensable that the Millennium Development Goals reach the individuals and make sure their human rights guarantee the economical and social independence of women.

The World March of Women provided this opportunities for opening, straighteningand uniting the efforts in the fight of the poor women all around the world.
